Two dose PCV schedule
New research shows that a two dose course of PCV gives as good protection as the three doses now given on the NHS. Currently 3 doses of the pneumococcal vaccine, PCV, are given on the NHS immunisation schedule at 2, 4 and 12 months. Research comparing the effectiveness of this schedule with a two dose schedule at 3 and 12 months has discovered that they are equally effective. As we try at BabyJabs to give as few vaccines as necessary to provide protection we are delighted that we can now advise a two dose schedule with confidence of its effectiveness. In practice we usually advise giving the first PCV later than 3 months which renders it even more effective as vaccines are invariably more effective when given later.
