Polio vaccine recommended for travellers to Israel

The wild polio virus has been isolated from sewage and faeces from asymptomatic carriers in Israel throughout most of 2013. Asymptomatic carriers are those who carry the virus in the gut without developing any symptoms of disease; many of these will have been vaccinated with the inactivated (killed) polio vaccine (IPV) which is very effective at preventing polio disease but may not prevent carriage of the virus in the gut. There has been an actual outbreak of polio disease in neighbouring Syria which has resulted in the paralysis of 22 children. We advise all travellers to Israel to ensure that they and their children are fully protected against polio. BabyJabs offers the aluminium-free single polio vaccine.
