Rotavirus is a virus (bug) that is a common cause of diarrhoea in children. By the age of 5 all children will have encountered the bug, usually during the first two years of life. Rotavirus diarrhoea occurs in annual epidemics every spring. Though many children die throughout the world from rotavirus infections, children infected in the UK and other developed countries rarely become seriously ill. Several thousand children are admitted to hospital every year in the UK with dehydration caused by rotavirus diarrhoea, it is extremely rare for children to die form rotavirus in the UK: around 3 children die every year from rotavirus infection in the UK.
