Taking your baby for their vaccinations can feel overwhelming. You know it’s important, but that doesn’t stop you from worrying.

Will they cry? Will they be upset afterwards? How can you make it easier for them – and yourself?

At BabyJabs, we understand these concerns. We’ve helped thousands of parents navigate the vaccination process, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

With a little preparation and reassurance, you can help your baby stay as comfortable as possible. Here’s how.

Why vaccinations matter

Vaccinations protect your baby from serious illnesses. They also help prevent diseases from spreading in the wider community.

That doesn’t mean the process is always easy, especially if you are worried that you or your child might feel anxious. No parent likes to see their child uncomfortable, even for a few seconds. But knowing what to expect – and how to prepare – can make a big difference.

Before the vaccination appointment: Setting the stage for a calm experience

A little planning can help you and your baby feel more at ease. Our advice is that you:

1.      Choose the right time

Book the appointment for a time of day when your baby is usually well-rested and fed. A tired or hungry baby is more likely to be unsettled.

If your little one isn’t feeling well on the day, it’s OK to reschedule. Just let us know.

2.      Bring comfort items

A favourite blanket, a soft toy, or a dummy can help your baby feel safe and comforted. If they have something they love to cuddle, bring it along.

3.      Dress for easy access

Vaccines are typically given in the thigh or upper arm, so it’s helpful to choose clothes that make it simple to reach the injection site. A short-sleeved and legless vest or loose outfit will help things go quickly and smoothly.

4.      Consider a numbing cream

For older babies and young children, Emla cream (a numbing cream available without a prescription) can help reduce the sensation of the injection.

Apply it to the injection site about an hour before your appointment. If you’re unsure how to use it, just ask – we’re happy to guide you.

During the appointment: Helping your baby stay calm

The moment has arrived. Here’s what you can do to make the appointment itself as easy as possible for both of you:

1.      Hold them close

Babies feel safest in the arms of someone they know and trust. If you hold them during the injection, it will provide security and comfort.

Tiny babies can find it soothing to be cradled. If they’re a little older, sitting them on your lap can help them to feel safe.

2.      Breastfeed or offer a bottle

If you’re breastfeeding, you can feed your baby during or immediately after the injection. Studies show this helps reduce pain and calm babies quickly (apparently, it reduces crying by approximately 38 seconds!)

If you’re bottle-feeding, offering a dummy or giving a bottle while your child is vaccinated can have a similar soothing effect.

3.      Use gentle distraction

A soft voice, a familiar song, or even making funny faces can help shift your little one’s focus. Some babies respond well to gentle rocking or stroking.

If your child is older, bringing a small toy, a book, or playing a favourite video can also work well.

4.      Try a ShotBlocker for older children

For children who are more aware of the injection, a ShotBlocker can help. This simple device uses a number of blunt contact points to essentially “confuse” the sensory signals around an injection site, making the needle poke feel less noticeable.

You can buy a ShotBlocker from our London BabyJabs clinics and bring it along for future appointments (you can also use it if your child ever needs to have a blood test).

5.      Manage your own emotions as much as possible

It’s completely natural to feel a little anxious about your baby’s vaccinations – many parents do. But babies are incredibly perceptive and often pick up on their parents’ emotions. Taking a few deep breaths, reminding yourself that this is a quick and positive step for your baby’s health, and using a calm, reassuring tone can help both of you feel more at ease.

If you’re feeling particularly nervous, bringing a partner, friend, or family member for support can make the experience feel less stressful. And remember – you’re not alone. Our team is here to support you as much as your baby.

After the vaccination: Comfort and reassurance

The injection is over. Now it’s time for extra cuddles and care.

1.      Reassure and praise

Your baby might cry for a few seconds, but they’ll settle quickly with your warmth and reassurance. A calm, soothing voice and lots of cuddles will help them feel secure.

For older children, acknowledging their feelings and telling them how well they did can make an enormous difference and boost their resilience.

2.      Keep an eye on mild reactions

It’s normal for babies to be a little sleepy or fussy after a vaccination. Some might have a mild fever or a bit of redness at the injection site.

A cool, clean flannel on the area can help with any soreness. If your child seems unsettled, extra cuddles and skin-to-skin contact can work wonders.

If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to help. You’ll also find helpful advice in our Aftercare leaflet.

3.      Plan a quiet rest of the day

Some babies sleep more than usual after their jabs. Others might be a little clingy. Let them take the lead.

Keep things calm and relaxed – gentle play, a cosy nap, and lots of comforting touch.
