Aluminium in vaccines

Aluminium is the third most abundant element in nature (after oxygen and silicon) and occurs naturally in the human body in small amounts. It is also used as an adjuvant in vaccines, which means it’s an ingredient that boosts how well the immune system responds to a vaccine. Using adjuvants means vaccines can be given in smaller amounts and fewer doses.

All vaccines are extensively tested in clinical trials and aluminium is used in small quantities, if at all (it isn’t a suitable adjuvant for ‘live’ vaccines).

On average, an infant receives 4.4 milligrams of aluminium in total from vaccines during the first six months of life. During the same time period, breast-fed babies ingest about 7mg of aluminium from breast milk, while formula-fed infants ingest approximately 38mg. Infants who are fed soy formula ingest almost 117mg in six months.

Sometimes manufacturers’ leaflets for vaccines will refer to aluminium with a higher figure than those listed in the tables above. This is because they are referencing the amount of the aluminium compound (e.g. aluminium hydroxide), whereas we have calculated the amount of elemental aluminium within the compound.
